Guide: how to set up your Instagram profile and run test cycles with your own videos

A step-by-step way to get your Instagram profile ready and test content without guessing: professional account, account status, bio, 14 videos of your own, and a cover and caption per cycle.

Guide: how to set up your Instagram profile and run test cycles with your own videos

An Instagram test only teaches you something when the profile is in order, the material is yours and you change one variable at a time. I split it into three phases: profile, batch of videos and cycles. You can close the first two in a week.

I run growth here, and the question I get most is "what do I do with my first 14 videos?" The short answer: less guessing, more note-taking.

Download the guides as PDF

If you would rather follow along with the material open next to you, there are two free guides in plain language (both in Portuguese):

  • Clips guide (PDF): profile, 14 clips of your own, a 14-day cycle and how to read the result.
  • AI personas guide (PDF): meme character, the AI label rule, collab with up to 3 characters and profiles to study.

Phase 1: what should I check on the profile before the first video?

Five settings, in this order: account type, status, bio, AI label and gender. None of them is a reach trick. They are there so you do not find a problem halfway through the test.

  • Account type: professional, Creator category.
  • Account status: in Settings, check features, content removals, recommendation eligibility, availability for under-18s and monetization. Ideally everything is green. Only monetization in orange still lets you test, but it is a worse starting point.
  • Bio: three lines covering what you post, who it is for and the invitation to follow. Write your own. The bio of an official brand or character account is not yours to copy: it confuses visitors and can get you reported for impersonation. Look at profiles in your niche only to learn the structure.
  • AI label: turn on the AI-generated profile label under Edit profile (Instagram renamed it from "AI creator" in September 2026) only if the profile shows an AI-generated person, like a persona made with your own face. Profiles with real people leave it off.
  • Gender: an optional field that is not shown on the public profile. Keep it consistent with the profile and do not expect a reach effect.

New or old profile both work. What counts is having gone through the list.

Phase 2: where does the batch of 14 videos come from?

From you, or from someone who gave permission. It can be a clip of your own stream or podcast, your own recording, or a clip from a creator who let you clip them (keep the permission).

Study accounts in your niche, but write down the pattern and leave the file: the hook in the first two seconds, the length, the pacing and the format. Instagram already buries reposts and other apps' watermarks, and the 2026 direction favors recorded material and clear provenance. Fourteen videos of your own are worth more than a hundred borrowed ones.

In Cut.Pro the path to those fourteen is: paste the link to your stream or podcast, it transcribes, the AI looks for the peaks, reframes to vertical following the face and adds captions. The clips come back for review and only what you approve goes into the queue. Depending on the video length, processing takes a few minutes.

What is left is the batch cover: simple, with the same background, the same font and a short title. You pick it under "Cover photo" when you publish.

How do I pick and finish each clip?

A good clip is a stretch where something happens, with a beginning, middle and end in under a minute. Pull the 14 from more than one source (two or three streams or episodes) so the cycle does not depend on a single topic.

  • Length: Socialinsider analyzed 6 million brand-page Reels in the first half of 2026 and the highest median views sat at 45 to 60 seconds (10,374), against 4,700 at 1 to 30 seconds. That is brand-page data, not clipping-account data: treat it as a hint, not a rule.
  • Hook: Meta publishes that it predicts the chance someone watches less than 3 seconds. Open on the strong moment, not on context.
  • Cut point: look at the retention graph and cut where it drops, usually when the host interrupts or the story takes a turn.
  • Format: vertical, no black bars, good resolution, with sound and without text covering most of the screen. Instagram lists these among the things that get shown less.

In Cut.Pro the AI suggests the clips from the link, reframes to vertical and adds captions. What goes into the batch is still your call. More in how to go viral with clips.

What if the profile uses an AI persona?

An AI persona enters this guide in two ways, and both need care.

  • The profile is fronted by a persona (faceless channel, virtual influencer): turn on the AI-generated profile label from phase 1. Without it the account can be flagged as not recommendable. See the risks and opportunity of a faceless channel.
  • You swap the person in a video of yours for a persona: the video runs 4 to 30 seconds, and you can use a ready-made character, your own face with up to 6 photos, a character sheet you already have or one built from scratch. Compare with the original before publishing. The credit price shows before you generate, and if generation fails the credits come back. The paths are in the 4 ways to create a persona and how to swap the person in a video.

For the cycle, the persona is a variable like the cover: use the same one throughout a cycle and, if you swap, swap only that. Use only your own face, or that of someone who gave permission.

Phase 3: how do I run and read a cycle?

A cycle is 14 days with one video a day, all with the same cover and the same base caption. When it ends, you change one thing and start the next.

The caption follows a fixed structure: hook, context, a question for the comments and three to five hashtags. For the next cycle's version, paste the current caption into ChatGPT and ask it to keep the language, structure and line breaks while changing only the subject. Reread it before using it: it still has to be true about the video.

There is no required time of day. What matters is keeping volume and being able to compare, and you can schedule posts in Cut.Pro instead of opening the app every day.

At the end of the 14 days, compare with the previous cycle the median views (the middle value, which one video that blew up does not distort), shares per 1,000 views, followers gained and the most-viewed video, noted separately.

To read each video, use three view bands. They are practical markers, not Instagram rules, since Instagram has never published the size of its distribution waves:

  • Up to about 200 views: the video mostly reached people who already follow you. Before touching the cover or caption, check Account Status and whether the material is original. Reels stuck at 200 views covers this point.
  • Around 600 views: this is the average band for small accounts. Socialinsider's 2025 benchmark put it at 580 views per Reel for accounts with 1k to 5k followers. You are at average, which proves nothing about the cover or caption.
  • From 1,000 views: a sign the video got past the first test wave. There is no official "thousand" number: it is a creator reading, useful for comparing one cycle with another.

In each cycle, count how many of the 14 videos passed 200, 600 and 1,000. The new version only stays if the median goes up or more videos pass 600, and a cycle with fewer than 10 published videos is not a valid comparison. Change only the cover or only the caption per cycle, or you never know what mattered.

To test without exposing the profile, use trial reels, which are shown only to people who do not follow you. And to know what the algorithm measures, read the 3 Instagram ranking signals.

What I would do starting today

I would close phase 1 today, pick the batch by the end of the week and run the first cycle without touching anything in the middle. None of this guarantees views: Instagram decides, and results vary from profile to profile. What the method does guarantee is that by the third cycle you know something about your audience that you did not know before.
